Uncovering a Tooth and Why It is Sometimes Necessary to Help Permanent Teeth Grow In
Uncovering a Permanent Tooth
Has your Orthodontist recommended that a tooth be uncovered?
Here is a explanation as to why it is necessary to uncover a tooth that cannot grow in on it’s own.
What does it mean to have a permanent tooth uncovered?
Sometimes teeth are impacted and need help erupting into the mouth. A referral to a Periodontist (gum specialist) or Oral Surgeon is given. The specialist will remove a small layer of bone and gum to create an opening for the tooth to erupt.
Once the tooth is visible, a bracket is placed to guide the tooth into position. Once the tooth is in position, a soft tissue laser may be used to remove excess gum tissue surrounding the tooth. This is done during one of your orthodontic appointments.
When do we recommend a tooth be uncovered?
A permanent tooth that has gone off course that needs help erupting in the mouth. One of the most common teeth that need uncovering are upper cuspids that are displaced in the palate.
Sometimes twelve-year molars are covered with tissue and need the tissue be removed surgically to allow them to erupt.
Lower cuspids can go off course and need to be uncovered with a bracket and chain placed to guide them into position.
When Your Smile Journey Includes Teeth Needing To Be Uncovered…
When you visit the specialist who is uncovering the tooth, they will explain the procedure so you feel comfortable with the process.
The specialist will communicate with your Orthodontist with a post-treatment letter to confirm the procedure is complete.
Your Orthodontist will then monitor progress, place braces at the appropriate time, and guide the teeth into ideal position.
Saving permanent teeth that are impacted and guiding them into position is the recommended treatment compared to extraction.
